Union Street Christmas Lights Switch On
2009
The 2009 Union Street Christmas Lights switch on took place on Sunday the 15 November 09. Union Street Christmas Lights Switch On 09 was
performed by 7 year old Ellie Ewen with the Lord Provost Peter Stephen.
The theme for the 2009 Union Street Christmas Lights switch on was the twelve days of Christmas. The parade was led by the Aberdeen City snow ploughs and gritters, symbolically clearing the path for the other vehicles and walkers. The Christmas carriage for Ellie Ewen and the Lord Provost was a beautiful old vehicle, About Aberdeen think it may even have been a Rolls Royce. As they passed each light it was switched on and confetti was launched into the air. Then the procession, based on the twelve days of Christmas, followed. For example for the six geese a laying there were six ladies dressed in huge geese costumes with the heads wandering along spectators so that children could stroke them. The nine stunning ladies dancing leapt and twirled down Union Street whilst the handsome ten Lords a leaping looked splendid in their morning suits and top hats.
Other floats and attractions at the Union St Christmas lights switch on 2009 included several old minis, coopers and clubman from the Aberdeen Mini Club. The Mini’s were festively dressed in baubles and tinsel. Gasps of aawww were heard as the K Ecosse Working Dogs pulled sleighs. Music and movement was provided by the Portlethen Pipe Band, Gordon School of Dance, Leading Lights and Ragamuffin theatre groups.

Road closures for the Aberdeen Union Street Christmas lights switch on involve routes from Albyn Place, Union Street and the Castlegate.

joined by 13 year old Josh Smith who was chosen by his teachers at Hazlehead Academy to ride in the Christmas carriage and wave the magic wand to switch on the Aberdeen Christmas
lights for Santa who made confetti magically fall as each light was lit.
Spectators saw many of the stars of
two of the pantomines in Aberdeen. From HMT there was comedy duo Alan McHugh and Jordan Young who are performing in Peter Pan. Aberdeen Arts Centre panto, Robin Hood, performers
from the Attic Theatre Group also braved the cold in their panto costumes. During the Union Street Christmas Lights switch on there was a big carnival parade which included
