Book Review
This pocket sized book is a wee gem filled with old photographs and pictures of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Each
photo tells a story and Norman Adams narrates this as he delves into the history of The Granite City. For example
there are several pages about the trams of Aberdeen, The Carries, and their demise which ended in them being burned
at the beach in 1958.
Aberdeen City
Aberdeen City is full of statues and monuments and this is an ideal book for those who are interested in their
origins and the story behind each one. I've often walked past the Mannie Well at the Castlegate, but never knew it
was once located at Green where until 1972 it was part of a well.
Union Street, the heart of Aberdeen, features heavily in the book, from parades such as The Aberdeen Festival to
scenes of queues for prominent concerts and new cinemas.
Aberdeen boasts some of the oldest buildings in Scotland and indeed the UK. Provost Skene's House is one such example
and it is great to see this 17th Century building featured in this book and how it was saved from demolition
by Queen Elizabeth.
Stories and Photographs of the Second World War Aberdeen
There are stories and photographs of the Second World War, including bomb damage from the many raids of the
German Air Force, The Luftwaffe.
Royal Deeside
Royal Deeside and Aberdeen has strong Royal Family connections and visits such as the visit by the Royal Yacht Victoria
and Albert and Britannia to Aberdeen docks are recorded and pictured. The relationship with the North Sea is
continued with photos and text about the fishing and oil trade through the years. There are also photos and descriptions
of Aberdeen's lovely beach.
Views from Pittodrie and text about the history of Aberdeen football Club brings us up to date. I hope the author
treats us to further volumes of this great wee book.
The Wee Book Of Aberdeen is a book to enjoy either in one sitting or to flick through in an idle moment. However
you choose to read the book
I know you'll enjoy seeing the changing face of Aberdeen, The Silver City With The Golden Sands, as you turn each
historic photo and read about this marvellous City of ours.
