Slains Castle Pub and Restaurant Aberdeen Slain
Built on a former church and graveyard this converted church has been turned into a themed pub which has retained and made
use of many of the original church features. It is also known as Slain Pub. A meal here isn't just about the delicious food:
the atmosphere is fun, but spooky. Picture the Addams Family and The Munster's Houses combined with your favourite restaurant
with friendly staff then you begin to imagine what a meal here is like. Do arrive early and walk around the three floors
and soak up the eerie atmosphere and enjoy the many exhibits such as decaying skeletons, alchemist equipments, suits
of armour and a horse in armour, gargoyles, doors that look like library book shelves and a large photo of the original
Slains Castle in Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire. Don't worry though - the displays won't put you off the food!
The outside is worth a photograph or several pictures from different angles as the original church building has been
largely untouched. The beer garden is in the area of the graveyard. To gain access to the pub and restaurant does
involve some steps so may not be suitable for disabled people. Children are permitted into the bar and restaurant up till
6pm and only if accompanied by an adult. Families are made to feel most welcome and there is a range of customers - from
goths, young and old, couples and singles and even ghosts, witches and vampires if you look carefully enough! Our
favourite table is below the broomstick.
There are some large leather and aged armchairs and sofas to sit on around the bar. These are lovely and comfy and
great for relaxing in over a pint or cup of tea whilst reading your favourite book or newspaper. There is a selection
of games in this area such as othello and chess.
The interior is atmospherically lit, helped by the deep dark wood panelling and wooden floor. Chandelier and candle effect
lights are scattered around. There are three large booth type tables in the restaurants which are made to resemble pulpits
and thrones. Large group tables give the impression of being sat in a banqueting hall, helped along with the large old wooden
chairs.
Beware of the wailing woman ghost in the toilet! You may see her picture on one of the walls.
Menu Of Slains Castle Pub and Restaurant
There are separate menus for the adults and children. Children's meals are under £4 and include a drink and
pudding. Meals include fish fingers and chicken nuggets all served with chips, beans and peas.
The adult menu is extensive and includes daily specials. Meals include build your own burgers, a range of salads,
sandwiches and jacket potatoes with different toppings. For the larger appetite there are over 6 starter choices including
doughballs with garlic butter, nachos with five bean chilli or soup of the day served with a variety of bread such as farmhouse white or multigrain, sundried
tomato ciabatta, rosemary and sea salt focaccia. Main meals include battered fish and chips with mushy or garden peas, a freshly
baked pie of the day with vegetables and potatoes or a range of pasta dishes. Sweets include seasonal fruits served with meringue
and cream, hot puddings such as bread and butter pudding and various gateaus and cakes.
Our favourite meal is the all day breakfast with unlimited tea or coffee and toast. This will fill the largest
of appetites and includes all the traditional cooked breakfast choices of bacon, eggs, sausages, fried bread, beans, tomatoes,
hash browns and fried mushrooms. The waitresses come back to regularly top up the toast and hot beverages.
The bar and restaurant serve an extensive range of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks and Slains Castle own
range of cocktails and throat warmers. Each cocktail is named after the
seven deadly sins.
Vegetarian dishes are available.
Events At Slains Castle
Each Thursday evening from 8 pm until the bar closes there are Tarot Card Readings. Each reading is for 30 minutes
and costs £15.
There is a pub quiz each Wednesday night at 8:30 pm
