    Scottish Week


    Since 1961 Scotland and other parts of the World have celebrated Scottishness and the produce of Scotland by holding a gala festival of celebration called Scottish Week. Many towns and villages throughout Scotland held events. In the UK only Peterhead, Aberdeenshire still celebrate it as do New York in America.

    Peterhead in Grampian still keeps the traditional of Scottish Week alive and each year events are held through the town to promote Scottish tourism, culture, produce and entertainment. It is named Peterhead Scottish Week.







    Peterhead Scottish Week is usually held in July and events usually include:

    The 50th Scottish Week in Peterhead takes place in 2011. A special event is planned by the Scottish Week Peterhead committee and it is rumoured that the RAF Red Arrows may put on a display.

    2007 Peterhead Scottish Week


    The 2007 Peterhead Scottish Week events starts from Saturday 21 July. The events start with the crowning of Kelly Hall, the Buchan Queen for 2007. She will be joined by her princesses Jamie Lee Steyn and Leanne Smith. Kelly Hall will be crowned by local TV celebrity and fisherman Jimmy Buchan from BBC1 television programme Trawlermen.

    Drummers Corner Entertainment

    Drummers Corner shopping area in Peterhead will have some live entertainment on the Saturday 21 July from 10am. This includes performances by the Peterhead Rock School, singers Stephanie Bruce and Gillian Park, a display by the Lawrence School of Rock and the Anne Buchan Dance School, the Rock School Band, the Ythan Fiddlers, Skip to the Beat and the Tommy James Disco. There will also be market stalls and children rides at Drummers Corner beside the New Look shop.


    Food Fayre

    Local supermarket Asda are the sponsors of a food fayre that is being run on Sunday 22 and Monday 23 July from 10am until 3pm. A free bus will be available from Prince Street from 10am until 3pm. It includes food tasting, the sale of local produce and cookery demonstrations by the chef of Waterside Inn, Kareen Horne.

    Five A Side Football

    A five a side football match will be hosted by Grampian Fire and Rescue Service at Dales playing fields in Peterhead from 1pm. It is open to any groups and companies.


    Deal Or No Deal Night

    A new event for the 2007 Peterhead Scottish Week is the Deal or no Deal TV style competition. This DOND night event is open to charities on Tuesday 24 July from 7 pm at the Peterhead Community Centre. The Deal Or No Deal night will follow the television programme format of contestants choosing sealed boxes ranging from 1 penny to £1000.

    Health and Fitness Fair

    On Monday the 23 July from 6 to 9 pm there is a health and fitness fair at the Peterhead Heritage Centre called the Let's get active in the Blue Toon. This coincides with the Peterhead Marinathon which will start at 7 pm at Peterhead Lido. Entrants will walk, jog or run a 3km route which starts and finishes from the water pumping station. A entrants who complete the event will receive a free goody bag and medal. Registration takes place at Peterhead Sailing Club from 6 pm until 6:45 pm.

    Antiques Valuation

    At the Palace Hotel on Tuesday 24 July 2007 from 09:30 to noon there will be an antiques valuation session.

    Bonny Baby

    In the afternoon, from 2pm, the Palace Hotel Peterhead will then host a baby show with the overall winner being awarded the Peterhead Scottish Week Bonny Baby 2007 title. Categories in the Peterhead baby show are from 3 to 6 months, 6 to 9 months, 9 to 12 months, 15 to 18 months and special category of twins plus. Judging takes place in the Palace Hotel Ballroom and admission costs £1.

    Summer Evening Entertainment

    Mrs Bridges tea room on Marischal Street will host a Music for Summer Evening entertainment with tea on Tuesday evening from 7:30 pm in aid of the Cats Protection. Tickets costs £5.

    Peterhead Pop Idol Competition

    Peterhead Pop Idol competition will take place on Wednesday 25 July from 1:30 pm at the Palace Hotel. Entrants can rehearse from 10 am. Admission price is £1 and entrants is restricted to school age children. The entry form for Peterhead Pop Idol can be found in the Peterhead Scottishweek programme.

    Artist Challenge

    The Peterhead Scottish Week artist challenge for children will take place on Wednesday 25 July from 10 am until noon at the Rescue Hall, Peterhead. Adults and juniors can take part from 1 pm to 4 pm. This is a free event and the theme for kids is Turrets and Towers whilst the adult and junior theme is The Natural World. Adult entrants may exhibit one painting. Entry forms can be obtained on the day or from the Buchan Observer Office at 17 Chapel Street in Peterhead and from the Peterhead Community Education Centre.

    Scottish Week Challenge Trophy

    The Scottish Week Challenge Trophy football match takes place at the Balmoor Stadium in Peterhead with a kick off at 7:30pm. The Blue Toon will be playing Inverness Caley Thistle FC.

    Scottish Week Pub Quiz

    The Peterhead Scottish Week Pub Quiz takes place at 8pm on Wednesday 25 July at Bailies on Broad Street. Entry costs £5 for a team of four.

    Sandcastle Competition

    A sandcastle competition takes place at Peterhead Lido on Thursday 26 July.

    Dog Show

    The dog show will take place at Peterhead Community Centre on 26 July from 7pm. The Peterhead dog show is sponsored by Scallywaggs Dog Grooming and Kinmundy Kennels. It will be run to Kennel Club rules and regulations with classes including any variety sporting dogs, any variety non sporting dogs, any variety puppy of 6 to 12 months in age, any variety junior and any variety veteran dog over seven years of age. Other fun classes in the dog show include best child handler, waggiest tail, dog with the most beautiful eyes and lookalikes. Entrance fee is £2.50 per class. Entry forms can be obtained from the Buchan House Veterinary Clinic.

    Scottish Week Gala Day

    The Scottish Week Gala Day starts at 1:30 pm on Saturday 28 July 2007 at Peterhead Lido. During the day there will be various events, an inflatable assault course and a climbing wall from the army, stalls, marquee for teas and licensed drinks, face painting and music. Entertainers include Chariots of Fire display team who will perform stunts with ponies and carriages, The Trybe, Peterhead Rock School, the Golden Lions parachute display team (3:30 pm) and the Babiebelz drumming band.

    The Peterhead gala starts with the annual parade through Peterhead town centre of vintage vehicles and carnival floats from local groups, organisations and businesses. Judging starts at 12:30 pm at Windmill Street and the parade starts at 1pm. Entrance costs £10 with charities and youth organisations being able to take part for free. Children can also ride their cycles for free during the parade and are encouraged to decorate their bicycles with three prizes for the best entries. The route sees the parade make their way to Kings Street, Queen Street, Chapel Street, Marischal Street, Erroll Street and then finishing at Kirk Street though some entrants may then make their way to the Peterhead Lido. An entry form for the parade can be found in the Peterhead Scottish Week programme.

    There will be a free shuttle bus by Stagecoach Bluebird from Kirk Street to Peterhead Lido from 1:30 to 2:30 pm.

    Peterhead Scottish Week Fireworks Display

    Weather permitting the 2007 Peterhead Scottish Week fireworks display will take play on Friday 27 July at about 10:30pm at Peterhead Lido. It is being sponsored by Peterhead Port Authority. Prior to this there will be stalls such as a kipper BBQ, burger vans and glow sticks. Mambos Nightclub is sponsoring a free bus back to the Peterhead town centre from 11:30 pm until 12:30 pm.

    Fancy Dress Competition

    The Peterhead fancy dress competition takes place at the Salvation Army Hall, Windmill Street on Saturday 28 July from 11:45 am. Judging will take place at 12:30 pm by the Salvation Army Captain. Entrants can then take part in the Peterhead gala parade.

    It's A Knockout

    A new event for the 2007 Peterhead Scottish Week is a fun competition based on It's a Knockout. This will take place at the Balmoor Stadium in Peterhead on Sunday 29 July from 2pm. Just like the popular television programme it will have silly themed games where the contestants may get a bit wet! It's a Knockout Peterhead is sponsored by Gillanders Motors of Peterhead and the theme for this first It's a Knockout games will be nursery rhymes. This includes Old MacDonald's Farm where teams have to take part in a relay race to collect the cuddly animals from the inflatable barn whilst negotiating an obstacle course. Other games during It's a Knockout include players dressing in inflatable costumes to take part in Humpty Dumpty and being blind folded and herded by a player pretending to be a sheep dog during Baa Baa Blind Sheep.

    Other events during Peterhead Scottish Week include a kitchen fire demonstration by Peterhead Fire Service at the Lido at 8:30 pm and Northsound live music from a Shell marquee on the Friday evening with Northsound DJs Richie Grant and Craig Milne.

    At the Rescue Hall in Peterhead on Sunday 29 July there will be a Highland dancing festival from 11 am.

    Peterhead Sailing Club celebrate Scottish Week with beginners sailing lessons from 10am to noon and 2pm to 4pm on the 23 and 24 July. These childrens sessions cost £10.

    Various churches and church halls throughout the Peterhead area will be holding open doors, coffee and cake mornings, concerts and drop ins. There is more information about these sessions at the scottishweek web site.

    A darts tournament takes place from 1pm on Sunday 29 July at Peterhead Football Club.

    Middleton Scout Hut on York Street in Peterhead will be displaying Scouting photos during an exhibition from 1pm to 4pm on the 24, 25 and 26 and from 7pm to 9pm on the 25.

    Victoria Bowling Club on Queen Street Peterhead will hold their annual open pairs tournament from 6pm from the 23 to 26 July with a final on the 27 July.


    Peterhead Scottish Week Programme

    The Peterhead Scottish Week Programme contains a more indepth timetable of events. There is also a lucky numbers competition where over £8000 of prizes can be won by matching the numbers in the programme to the numbers in Peterhead shop windows.

    Peterhead shops will be specially decorated and the theme for the 2007 Peterhead Scottish Week is Something Fishy. Voting forms to vote for your favourite decorated shop can be found in the Peterhead Scottish Week programme.
