Pitlochry Hydro Hotel

Reviews of the accommodation and restaurant of the Pitlochry Hydro Hotel with photographs and things to do

This is such a picturesque and peaceful area of Scotland with something for everyone to enjoy. The Pitlochry Hydro Hotel is a beautiful and historic building with some fine views across to the Perthshire hills and forests. An added benefit is the swimming pool, sauna and Jacuzzi.

My new novel:

The Fence Aberdeen Zombie post apocalyptic military survival Novel Book

The Aberdeen skies are under attack from an enemy jet. It is spilling a strange yellow smoke. Minutes later, people start killing each other.
Former Royal Air Force Regiment Gunner Jason Harper witnesses this and then his wife, Pippa, telephones him, shouting that she needs him. They then get cut off. He sets straight out, unprepared for the nightmare that unfolds during his journey. Everyone seems to want to kill him.
Along the way, he pairs up with fellow survivor Imogen. But she enjoys killing the living dead far too much. Will she kill Jason in her blood thirst? Or will she hinder his journey through this zombie filled dystopian landscape to find his pregnant wife?
The Fence is the first in this series of post-apocalyptic military survival thrillers from the torturous mind of local horror and science fiction novel writer C.G. Buswell.

It has two large car parks with plenty of disabled parking. The reception is always manned and there are lifts to the bedrooms. Please do consider paying the extra when booking for a superior or premier room which gives you a King size bed, room with a view, larger TV, more toiletries, etc. It is worth the price just to see the sunsets and dawns across the hills.

Aberdeen Lynne Golden Retriever

Have you seen my beautiful golden retriever Lynne out and about in Aberdeen? Ask her for a high-five! She's a Bravehound PTSD assistance dog, so we'll often be in shops, restaurants, and the cinema together.

We've written a book where I talk about growing up in Aberdeen and then joining the army to be a medic and nurse, and developing military Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I also talk about losing my son to suicide and the therapy I have had at Royal Cornhill Hospital and grief support groups in Aberdeen.

The author, Damien Lewis, said of Lynne:

"A powerful account of what one dog means to one man on his road to recovery. Both heart-warming and life-affirming. Bravo Chris and Lynne. Bravo Bravehound."

The restaurant is roomy and the food plentiful. We enjoyed a range of cereals, croissants, yoghurts, fresh fruit, dried fruit, porridge, toast and a cooked breakfast each morn, washed down with a wide range of fruit juices and coffee or tea.

You do have to book a time slot for your evening meal, though this is flexible as we found out when we decided to add the Rannoch Moor Train Station to our day trips and wanted a later evening meal. We just phoned an hour before our set time and got a booking for later so that we could see this tourist attraction.

The bed was really comfy and we enjoyed a good night's sleep, though the bar stayed open late there was little noise and being set in a quiet residential area there was no noisy traffic. We slept with a window opened and were not disturbed until we were woken up with the lovely gentle cooing of wood pigeons which was such a treat.

Pitlochry town centre is a ten minute walk, though we took the car because the hill was too steep for our aged knees. There are plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants to enjoy a wide range of food and drink. A sweet shop sells some great treats and there are plenty of local craft and gift shops.

You can even get a haircut or cut throat shave from the Sweeney Todd demon barber horror hairdresser if you dare! Or just be a feartie like us and just take a photo of his unique horror filled salon with fantastic dummy outside.

The war memorial is worth paying a few moments respect to those fallen troops of the local Regiment the Black Watch. Behind it sits a well maintained garden with plenty of benches.

The Visit Scotland Tourist Information Office is along the main high street where helpful staff can suggest places to visit or to stay.

We highly recommend visiting the Queen's View, Falls of Bruar, Pass of Killiecrankie Walk, Atholl Country Life Museum, Blair Castle and Diana Grove with Hercules Garden, Dunkeld Cathedral, Loch of Lowes Osprey, Beatrix Potter Garden, The Hermitage and Ossian's Hall and Cave if you enjoy a woodland walk which is also wheelchair accessible. To discover more about our heritage do go to the Scottish Crannog Centre.
