Michael Sheard Actor Biography
Michael Sheard was born in Aberdeen on the 18th June 1938. His birth name was Donald Marriot Perkins. His father
was a Church of Scotland Minister (Donald Perkins). They lived at Carlton Place. His mother's maiden name was
Sheard and he later took this as his stage name. He was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School. The family moved to
England when Michael was 15, though returned regularly to The Granite City to visit relatives. Michael studied
at London's The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Before starting his acting career he served two years in
the Royal Air Force.
Films and Television Appearances Of Michael Sheard
His most fondly remembered role was as the Grange Hill teacher and deputy headmaster Mr Bronson who terrorised his
pupils with his cries of "You Boy!" during the 1980s.
He had roles in many of the blockbuster films of the 1970s and 1980s such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones. In Star
Wars he played Admiral Ozzel in The Empire Strikes Back film. His character was killed by Darth
Vader. George Lucas, the Director and Creator of Star Wars, described his acting as the best death scene he'd ever
seen. He was choked to death by Vader.
He worked again with Harrison Ford in his films of the Indiana Jones character in the first film
Raiders of the Lost Ark where he played the U-Boat Captain. Michael Sheard played
Adolf Hitler in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.
Michael played Hitler in four more films and TV programmes - Rogue Male, The Dirty Dozen: The Next Mission, Hitler
of the Andes and The Tomorrow People. He played another Nazi, Heinrich Himmler, in the films The Death of Adolf
Hitler, The Bunker and in the TV programme Space.
He acted in British soap operas Crossroads and Coronation Street. He also had roles in classic comedies such as Allo
Allo, On The Buses, The Likely Lads and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. Science fiction roles included 4 roles in Doctor Who - The Headmaster in
Remembrance of the Daleks, Supervisor Lowe in The Invisible Enemy, Laurence Scarman in Pyramids of Mars
and Dr. Summers in The Mind of Evil and roles in Blakes 7 and The Tomorrow People. TV drama roles saw Michael have roles in The Darling Buds of May,
Bulman, Tales of the Unexpected, Minder, Z Cars, The New Avengers, Softly Softly, The Sweeney, Dixon of Dock Green,
The Protectors, Colditz, Jason King, Van der Valk, Paul Temple, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Adam Adamant Lives!
He regularly attended Dr Who and Star Wars conventions.
The Books Of Michael Sheard
Michael Sheard published his autobiography in 1997 entitled "Yes Mr Bronson - Memoirs Of A Bum Actor". The forward
was written by fellow actor Roger Moore. His other memoir books included "Yes, School's Out! : Sci-Fi Conventions,
Parties and Much, Much More ", "Yes It's Photographic: The Party Goes On" and "Yes, Admiral".
Michael died of cancer on the 31st August 2005 in the Isle of Wight where he had settled with his family. He
was aged 67. He is survived by his artist wife Ros Sheard and their three children. His son Simon Sheard has also
acted.
