John Lowrie Morrison was born in Maryhill, Glasgow in 1948. He moved with his parents and brother Murdo to Hyndland

He studied drawing and painting at Glasgow School of Art from 1967 to 1972 and then trained as a teacher at Jordonhill College in 1973. After qualifying he took a post at Lochgilphead High School. He met his future wife, Maureen at Templeton's Carpets where he had a summer job doing designs.

In 1987 John Lowrie Morrison became the principal art teacher at Lochgilphead High School. He was an Art Examiner with the Scottish Examination Board and became involved in Standard Grade Development and went on to become a member of the Higher Still Advisory Panel.

Why Is John Lowrie Morrison Called Jolomo

When John Lowrie Morrison used to doodle during Latin classes in Hyndland Secondary School he realised that the first two letters of his name made Jolomo. He didn't use the nickname until one day, years later, when a man in a factory where John's paintings were being framed shouted "Are there any more Jolomos over there" The nickname has now stuck.

Jolomo Paintings

From 1997 John Lowrie Morrison took up painting full time. His work reflects his Scottish surroundings and he paints scenery of the Highland and Islands countryside, beaches, crofts and surrounding hills in oils. The trademark of John Lowrie Morrison is high heavy use of the strong vivid blue colours in his paintings.

He has exhibited throughout the UK, USA, Europe, Canada and Australia. All his art works are signed Jolomo. Collectors of his work include well known celebrities such as Gregor Fisher, Sting, Sam Galbraith, Chris Patten and Madonna. Members of the Royal Family who have bought the paintings of Jolomo include Her Majesty The Queen.

In 2002 John Lowrie Morrison was ordained as a lay preacher for the Church of Scotland. He now lives in Tayvallich village at Knapdale in the West Coast of Scotland where he still paints in his studio. He is married to Maureen and they have three grown up sons. Jolomo paints over 1000 works of art each year. His paintings sell from £80 through to £5000 and some have even sold for £20,000.

Jolomo Foundation

In 2006 painter John Lowrie Morrison launched a new competition with a £20,000 prize for Scottish artists who use the countryside and landscapes of Scotland for inspiration. It is called the Jolomo Lloyds TSB Scotland Awards.

It was launched at his exhibition in Edinburgh which was opened by North East MSP David Davidson. The exhibition was to raise funds for Carers in Scotland, a charity close to John Lowrie Morrisons heart. He gives about 40 of his paintings to various charities each year.

The competition closed on the 15 December 2006 and more details can be found at www.jolomofoundation.org The results will be announced in June 2007.

Previous winners of the Jolomo Awards for Scottish Landscape Painting included Ingrid Fraser in 2007 who had only recently qualified from art school and is now submitting her own artwork for exhibitions.

Jolomo Aberdeen

Macmillan Cancer Support hosted an Art Exhibition at the Satrosphere Science Centre in Aberdeen from 25th April to the 5th May. At the preview on the 24 April an original Jolomo painting was donated and auctioned. Throughout the charity event there was also lectures and workshops hosted by artists, the embroidery guild and arts professionals.

Jolomo will exhibit in Aberdeen at the Carby Art Gallery, Cotton Street, in February 2007 from the 3rd. His exhibition is called The Argyll and the Isles exhibition and will feature about 50 of his paintings. On the day his exhibition launches John Lowrie Morrison will be at the Carby Art Gallery. Caledonianart

In 2009 John Lowrie Morrison (Jolomo) exhibited in the top London art gallery, Caledonianart, where 20 of his famous Scottish landscape paintings sold before it had opened. Previous buyers of Jolomo paintings have included the singers Madonna and Sting. The Dover Street, London exhibition was Jolomo's eight solo exhibition.
