How Did HMV Get Its Name
The abbreviation HMV means His Master's Voice and originated in 1899. HMV was a famous record label prior to becoming one of the UK’s leading music and home
entertainment retailers. Their corporate image and trademark was of a white fox terrier dog called Nipper listening through the ear of a wind up gramophone. It was
from a painting by English artist Francis Barraud which was titled His Master's Voice. It was bought from the artist in 1899 by the newly-formed Gramophone Company.
The dog belonged to his brother and Francis Barraud cared for Nipper when his brother, Mark, died. He also inherited a cylinder phonograph and recordings of his
brother’s voice. Nipper would listen intently down the trumpet to his former master’s voice when these recordings were played. This gave Francis Barraud the idea for
his canvas painting. The Gramophone Company (the earlier name for HMV) purchased the copyright of the painting on the condition that the artist change the disc machine
to one of their gramophone models. The image was first used in 1900.
Gromit HMV Logo
On the 1 April 2007 HMV announced that Nipper would be replaced by Gromit the Wallace and Gromit plasticine cartoon character by animator Nick Park. Gromit would
be pictured on the HMV Logo next to the gramophone for three months to promote the HMV Children's range. The press release for this news story went out on April Fool's Day.
The History of HMV
The Gramophone Company opened the first UK shop in London in 1921 and was called HMV. The Gramophone Company eventually became EMI and also owned RCA and then the UK chain of music shops became known as HMV as did the chains in Ireland, Canada, Australia, and Japan.
The company bought the Ottakers book chain which then became the Waterstone's chain of bookshops and then merged them with Dillons. In 2002 it floated on the London Stock Exchange as HMV Group plc, leaving EMI with only a token holding.
There are now over 400 HMV stores worldwide.
The HMV company operates around 200 stores in key shopping locations nationwide, such as Oxford Street in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Brighton, Newcastle, Horsham, Cardiff,
Dublin and Belfast. Other HMV Scottish branches include Glasgow at Argylle Street,
The HMV Group has stores in Canada, Hong Kong and Canada.
