    Hazlehead Park Highland Games Aberdeen


    Each year Hazlehead Park hosts Aberdeen's Highland Games with an assortment of games such as caber tossing, hammer throwing, Highland dancing, solo piping and tug of war game. The event is also known as The City Of Aberdeen Highland Games. It usually attracts about 15,000 attendants.

    Entertainment includes Pipe and Drum Bands, charity stalls, trade stands, food and drink tents and a fun fair.

    There will also be a mini Highland Games just for primary school children. Eco City run stands for the children to teach them about recycling and being environmentally friendly.

    Other stands will focus on energy efficiency, composting and fair trade goods for sale.

    2008 Aberdeen Highland Games

    The 2008 Aberdeen Highland Games took place on Sunday 15 June from 10am and was the 25th Aberdeen Highland Games to be sponsored by the whisky brand Glenfiddich. To mark the silver anniversary a silver caber was made by spray painting a caber. This silver caber was then thrown during the tossing of the caber event during the Aberdeen Highland Show. Glenfiddich also sponsor the other dozen Grampian Games held throughout the summer months. As part of their sponsorship deal Glenfiddich provide prizes of Scotch whisky to winners. Competing athletes are provided with special Glenfiddich branded clothing and tasty picnic lunch boxes.

    Events at the Aberdeen Highland Show included Highland Dancing, Highland Games, an Army Assault Course, Children's Mini Highland Games, Piping, Tug o' War, Kids Entertainment including a Bouncy Castle and other Fairground Attractions. Pipe bands included the Portlethen and District Pipe Band, Rubislaw Pipe Band.

    In the Queen's Birthday Honours 2008 Jim Brown of Fettercairn was awarded the MBE for his services to the Highland Games, the Grassic Gibbon Centre and the Robbie Burns Club.

    Over 10,000 people attended the 2008 Aberdeen Highland Games.


    2007 Aberdeen Highland Games

    The 2007 Aberdeen Highland Games was to be on Father's Day 17 June 2007 and there was to be a special workshop to teach and help the children design Father's Day gifts.

    Sadly the 2007 Highland Games in Aberdeen City was cancelled for health and safety reasons due to heavy rain fall from the Saturday.

    ChildLine founder and TV celebrity Esther Rantzen (That's Life!, Watchdog, Old Dog New Tricks, Excuse My French, Strictly Come Dancing) was to have officially opened the 2007 Hazlehead Park Aberdeen Highland Games.

    Another special event for 2007 was to have been a range of wooden games from the Forestry Commission.

    The Golden Lions parachute team were to give a display at the City of Aberdeen Highland Games before parachuting into the Hazlehead Park.

    Scot Thompson, the Scottish discus and shot put champion, was to have attempted to beat the world record for Scottish shot-put and height and weight records. The current record stands at 18ft 6in. In preperation Scott Thompson has been training with Geoff Capes the former world heavy and World's Strongest Man.

    Cran Tara will perform battle re-enactments.

    Live music would have been provided by Trybe and local musicians.


    2006 Aberdeen Highland Games

    Green Fun Day joined the 2006 Aberdeen Highland Games and had stands such as a children's stand where they can make crafts from recycled materials.

    The guest celebrity was the actor James Cosmo who recently starred as Father Christmas in the film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Brown in Greyfriars Bobby. He also starred as Tom in the 1994 TV series Roughnecks about Aberdeen oil workers.
