    Aboyne and Deeside Festival


    Each year, in July, there is an arts and theatre entertainment festival held throughout Royal Deeside at Braemar, Ballater and Aboyne. The event attracts local, national and international audiences and performers. Events and performances at the Aboyne and Deeside Festival include:

    2007 Events at Aboyne and Deeside Festival


    2007 is the 16th Aboyne and Deeside Festival and takes place from 24 June to 12 August throughout Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire. Events include:

    Special preview showing of the 5th Harry Potter film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on the 12 July 2007. This is a day before the general UK release.

    Gala Night on the 29 July 2007 with Soprano Pandy Arthur.

    Musical performances from concert violinist Leland Chen with pianist Jonathan Scott, the magic of Sinatra and Fitzgerald in the shape of Todd Gordon and Jacqui Dankworth, Pandy Arthur, tenor Jamie MacDougall and pianist George Donald.

    Dance performances from traditional Scottish dancers Dannsa and Gilbert and Sullivan from The Salon Serenaders.

    An Audience with John Sergeant.

    Music and poetry in private houses and at Balfour House

    concert pianist Joseph Long at the House of Newe, Donside

    Cellist Niall Brown and pianist Isabelle Trub at Torran Daroch, Aboyne

    Jazz singer Kate Gieben at Tornaveen Hall.

    Private gardens open to the public.

    Art Exhibition in the Victory Hall, Aboyne where the artist Alison Ewan will create a painting 'before your very eyes'.

    Emma Pattullo will run a pottery workshop in Torphins

    Violinist Leland Chen will conduct a master class for advanced performers.

    An illustrated talk by Anke Addy on the Galapagos.

    Historical and archaeological Walk in the Woods led by Hugh Cochran.

    Ballater Victoria Week celebrates the Royal family's long association with Deeside with numerous events for all ages, and for golfers, young and old, there will be competitions at various courses on Deeside, while for younger athletes there will be the Junior Games at Braemar and for those that like ceilidhs there will be events in Ballater and Braemar.

    The Aberdeen International Youth Festival will present Great Expectations in the Deeside Theatre, Aboyne.

    Deeside Theatre will show films including Venus starring Peter O'Toole and Becoming Jane, the story of Jane Austen's love life



    Active Aboyne


    To coincide with the Aboyne and Deeside Festival there are a number of more active and outdoors activities called Active Aboyne. These include organised walks including some Munros, kayaking, mountain biking, golf, sub aqua, Nordic walking, orienteering, bush craft classes, gliding, water skiing, geocaching (treasure hunting using a handheld GPS), Swedish wood carving , trail running and the Braemar Junior Highland Games.

    The first Aboyne and Deeside Festival was held in 1990.

    Past performers and speakers have included Joan Bakewell, Kate Adie, Clement Freud, James Naughtie, George Melly, Dennis Healy, Paul Anderson and Lisa Milne.


    The Aboyne and Deeside Festival is nicknamed The Festival In The Hills.




    2006 Events at Aboyne and Deeside Festival


    The 2006 event runs from the 25 June - 30 July.

    Highlghts of the 2006 event include:
    • 1 July - Todd Gordon sings songs from the Frank Sinatra era.

    • 8 July - An audience with TV historian Adam Hart-Davis at The Deeside Theatre, Aboyne.

    • 9 July - Actress Prunella Scales and her actor husband Timothy West will present the Battle of the Sexes at the Deeside Community Theatre, Aboyne.

    • 15 July - Leland Chen in Concert at The Deeside Theatre, Aboyne.

    • 29 July - An evening with Actor Saeed Jaffrey at The Deeside Theatre, Aboyne.
